What makes the TV series Yellowstone so popular? I think first of all it’s the storytelling. Taylor Sheridan does such a great job with the dialogue and the actors are able to deliver it with ease. The plot and build up of each show sets the storyline for the next. This is a big reason why Yellowstone and its many spinoffs are so successful. The second biggest factor in my opinion, is the setting of the show and the Dutton Ranch film locations. The sweeping Montana landscape is truly stunning and the show’s cinematography is top notch.
Located in the scenic Bitterroot Valley just outside of Darby, Montana is the Dutton Ranch. This is a big part of the show because after all, it’s where the Dutton family lives and works. But did you know that it is also a real life working ranch? In reality, the name is the Chief Joseph Ranch and it spreads approximately 2,500 acres.
What makes it especially compelling is that it wasn’t a set built for TV. In fact, the log mansion that serves as the Dutton family home is an actual residence. Built in 1917, the lodge-style mansion features hand-hewn logs, a striking stone fireplace, and a backdrop of snow-capped mountains that perfectly capture the essence of the American West.
Chief Joseph Ranch is private property, so casual drop-ins aren’t allowed. Visitors often stop near the front gate for photos, though access beyond that point is restricted. However, select cabins are available for guests and every stay includes a tour of the ranch. The cabins are very expensive and also require a minimum booking of three nights. Guests who can afford it would definitely get a truly immersive experience.
Even if you can’t stay overnight, many visitors travel to the area just to see the ranch from the outside and take photos near the entrance. Plus, the surrounding Bitterroot Valley is worth the trip on its own, offering hiking, fishing, and some of the most scenic views in America.
