Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize and along with Caye Caulker, the most popular spot for tourists. It’s known for its crystal blue waters and delicious seafood. The main attractions are snorkeling and scuba diving on the Belize Barrier Reef (the second largest after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef). San Pedro is the only town on Ambergris but is filled with lots of restaurants, shops, and bars.
Dive the Barrier Reef
The Belize Barrier Reef has some of the best diving in the world. With lots of beautiful marine life and colorful coral, it’s something not to be missed. (Check out the video below) Snorkeling is also a great alternative!
Rent a Golf Cart
The primary modes of transportation for locals are golf carts and bicycles. Almost everything in San Pedro is walkable so you don’t really need a cart for your entire stay. I do recommend renting one for at least one day. This will allow you to get out of town and visit Secret Beach.
Visit Secret Beach
Despite the name, Secret Beach is not really much of a secret. But that’s ok, because the beach itself isn’t all that great. However, it is a nice way to get out of town and spend an afternoon. Plus the ride there on a golf cart is so much fun!
Enjoy the Seafood
The seafood in Belize is so GREAT! I pretty much had it every single day I was there. Red Snapper is one of the tastiest fish in the sea and can be found at a number of restaurants. Be sure to try it with Caramba’s special coconut sauce. It is off the HOOK!
Partake in the Nightlife
It’s a party in Belize every night! There is always something going on whether it’s live bands, karaoke, or dancing. Most people start the night out at Fido’s and then continue on from there.
Meat Pies are a Must Try
Boogie’s Belly has the BEST meat pies ever! Made fresh every morning, they are absolutely delicious! But be warned, you must get there early to enjoy, because by 11am, they will be completely sold out.
Swim with Sharks and Rays
Shark Ray Alley is a popular dive and snorkeling spot. Local fisherman used to come here to clean their catch which drew an abundance of harmless nurse sharks and rays. Now these animals return everyday for a reliable meal, which is perfect for swimmers who want to get up close and personal.
Lunch at Briana’s Food Place
Briana’s is a hidden gem in San Pedro. A small hole in the wall that offers authentic local cuisine. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but I highly recommend the jerk chicken.
Happy Hour at Palapa Bar
Sitting on the water just across from the Blue Tang Inn is Palapa Bar and Grill. This is the perfect place to enjoy happy hour. Ice cold Belikin and live music! What else could you ask for?
Chicken Drop?!
So there is an interesting tradition in San Pedro of betting on which square a chicken will drop or “poop…” You pick a square on the board between 1 and 100, the chicken is released on the board, and then you hope that it chooses your square to take care of business.
Very interesting place, appreciate you for posting.
