Barefoot Cay Resort – Roatan

If you are looking for a quick getaway not too far from the United States, check out the beautiful island of Roatan. Located just off the northern coast of mainland Honduras, this island has beautiful beaches and some of the best diving in the world.

You will find a variety of hotels on Roatan with the majority located near the very touristy area known as the West End. However, if it is peace and relaxation that you are seeking, I highly recommend staying at the Barefoot Cay Resort. Built around a privately owned 4-acre cay, this small, boutique resort sits on the south shore between French Harbour and Brick Bay. Barefoot offers 9 luxury accommodations in a private setting with excellent service and modern amenities.

Because of the resort’s small size, one advantage of staying at Barefoot is that everyone knows one another and you are addressed by name. This creates a very comfortable and friendly atmosphere.

Perhaps the biggest perk of Barefoot Cay is its privacy. A 75-foot-wide channel separates the resort from the mainland giving guests the opportunity of complete freedom from the outside world. The Cay can be reached via walk-on pontoon boats at just a moments notice at any hour of the day or night.

The delicious meals are another highlight of staying at Barefoot Cay. Only available to guests, these are freshly prepared by request and include local specialties, such as shrimp, lobster, and fish, as well as chicken, beef and many other tasty options.

The resort features a large “T” shaped swimming pool which is partially covered by a sun-filtering palapa to provide shade. This is a great gathering spot to enjoy a cold beverage or bask in the afternoon sun.

If it’s a salt water swim that you prefer, you can take a short walk to the 260-foot-long swimming dock or relax in a hammock under the thatched roof palapa located at the end. The palapa also provides easy access to the water for snorkeling where you can see two-sunken wooden sailboats that attract a variety of colorful fish.

The resort also has its very own PADI-authorized 5-star dive center known as Barefoot Divers which can take you to some of the best dive sites on the island including the world famous Mary’s Place and John’s Spot.

I found Barefoot Cay to be very relaxing. The friendliness of the entire staff made my stay both pleasurable and memorable. I would definitely recommend Barefoot Cay to anyone looking to spend some time on the lovely island of Roatan.
